This can be achieved simply by paying attention to your vehicle and knowing the right questions to ask. When choosing an automotive shop use questions such as; “What certifications do the technicians have?“ , “What is your warranty for this type repair?“ “What maintenance is due soon?
We hope that you will find many good tips and useful information to assist you.

How do I find a shop for my vehicle?

Before you need a repair shop, ask people that you trust about theirs. Shop around for someone that has experience with your type of vehicle. Ask about rates, warranties, and certifications.   Most will be glad to talk with you about their shop and how it can best serve you. Ask to see the shop, is it clean or cluttered? This can be an indication of their work. What type cars are in for repair now? Do you see your type vehicle there?

What type support do they have for your vehicle? Do they do the type of work you need preformed? How do I pay for the repairs? Do they accept debit and credit cards. These types of questions will greatly help you in deciding if this is the shop for you. Make sure you feel comfortable in dealing with this shop.

Ok, I’ve found a shop, and now I think I have a problem. What do I do now?

Call first, make an appointment, be sure someone will be there to assist you before you take your vehicle to the shop. When you get there, find out how they will charge you. From a flat rate book? Or for the actual time spent? The approximate cost of the repairs and a realistic time for completion, (not what you want to hear). Remember you want it done right not necessarily the fastest. Have them explain what the procedures they will take to repair your vehicle. Will they use new parts from the manufacturer? These will almost always cost more than a remanufactured part. Have them tell you the price difference so you can better decide which part is best for you. What warranties apply and are there any differences. What about salvage parts? Are these an option? Have the shop call you after they have diagnosed the problem. If the price seems excessive for the work they are going to perform call around and find out if the price is fair before authorizing the work to be done. If you decide to take your car elsewhere for the repairs keep in mind there will most likely be a diagnostic charge for finding out what is wrong with your vehicle.

Make sure the work is completed before you go to pick up your vehicle. Part delays or other problems may delay the completion of your repairs so remember to call first.

What do I need to know when I pick up my car?

Make sure to get a repair order that shows the work done, this should include the parts used, and a breakdown of the labor to install them, charges for adjustments and what adjustments were made, and an odometer reading for warranties that may apply. Is there anything special that you need to know now that you have the vehicle back. Ask questions so you understand any warranties that are given to you. Ask to see your old parts now that the repairs are completed. Many shops to keep them for your inspection. Make sure to get a receipt that shows the date, your bill paid in full, and a signature of the person you paid.

My vehicle still isn’t right.

Contact the shop owner or manager first. If you did your homework when picking a shop, they should be able to take care of the problem under warranty. Remember they can only fix the problems they see, but realize that you know your vehicle best.
